| George was hired by Walt
Lytle of the Peavey grain elevator company at $100 per month. He would work for
Peavey for the next 21 years. They moved him to Haughton, Hazel's
home town. They had a fine company owned house and the Greens were
very happy. In his memoirs George revels that "it had a furnace,
indoor toilet with a bath and electric lights" he had never had any
of these things and he was thrilled. He went on to say "it
would be OK with me if we still lived in it."
A year later Peavey sold the Houghton elevator and George's house. After giving up ranching for the stability of a job George was now out of work and homeless. Dumbfounded, he asked if there was any other work and Walt said there was only one job...but it was two elevators and a feed mill and he didn't think George had the experience to do it. George said he could learn, Walt believed in him, and the Green family moved to Broadland. |
